Week 9 : Wide World of Comics

Persepolis is an amazing autobiographical novel about Marjane Satrapi growing up as a child and a woman in the Middle East. Her childhood was interrupted by the revolt of the Iranian Revolution, and Persepolis is forced into a hectic and rushed form of growing up in a short amount of time.

Most definitely this story is a teenage comic of age story. Theres a drastic difference between this setting and the typical Hollywood story, in which theres a premature summer story, teenage angst, parents who don’t understand and a phase of rebellion.

On the other hand, while dealing with the average teenager issues like family, emotions, and identity, Persepolis grows in the middle of a war. It really made me feel how lucky I have been, and how lucky most of America has been considering that we haven’t been at a full scale war within our borders since the American Revolution.
